Getting Started with BrighterBalance

Getting Started with BrighterBalance

BrighterBalance is designed to fit into your day, not add to it. This guide walks you through the steps to get your workspace set up so you can start capturing behavior data right away.

Step 1: Add Your Students

Notes
Start by adding only the students you plan to use BrighterBalance with. This keeps your workspace focused and manageable.

Add students one at a time:

  1. Open the Students section at the bottom of the app.
  2. Select + Student.
  3. Enter the student's First Name and Last Name.
  4. Optionally add Grade Level and Notes (accommodations, reminders, etc.).
  5. Choose whether to allow voice capture for this student.
  6. Select Save.

Import multiple students at once (up to 20):

  1. Open the dropdown next to + Student and select Import Students.
  2. Paste a list of student names — comma-separated, one per line, or copied from a spreadsheet.
  3. Select Import X Students.

No file upload, no column mapping. Just paste and import.

Step 2: Create Your Classes

Classes in BrighterBalance are based on your teaching schedule. When you log a behavior during a class period, BrighterBalance ties that log to the class — which leads to stronger insights and clearer reporting over time.

  1. At the bottom of the app, select Classes, then + New Class.
  2. Enter a Class Name (for example: "Math – Period 1" or "Homeroom").
  3. Select a Color to help you recognize the class quickly.
  4. Optionally toggle Schedule on and set the days, start time, and end time.
  5. Select Create.

Step 3: Enroll Students in Classes

Once your classes are created, connect your students to them.

  1. Select Classes at the bottom of the app.
  2. Select the class you want to update.
  3. Tap the three dots to the right of the class name and choose Edit Enrollments.
  4. Check or uncheck students to add or remove them.
  5. Select Save Changes.

Any behavior logged during a class period will automatically be tied to that class.

Step 4: Start Logging

With your students added and classes set up, you're ready to capture behavior data. Use Manual entry, Voice, Photo, or Email — whichever fits the moment.

Voice, Photo, and Email captures go to your Behavior Inbox first. Tap the Inbox icon in the bottom navigation bar to review, edit, and approve entries before they're saved to a student's record. Nothing is added to a student's profile until you approve it.

Step 5: Meet the Advisor

Once you've logged five behaviors for a student, BrighterBalance has enough data to start advising you. Tap Advisor at the bottom of the app to:

  • Evaluate what's working with a student
  • Identify behavior trends and patterns over time
  • Prepare for parent-teacher conferences and IEP meetings
  • Generate MTSS-ready progress reports
  • Get suggestions for adjusting a student's BIP

Advisor is designed to support your professional judgment, not replace it. You know your students best — Advisor is here to surface insights and save you time.

Step 6: Add a BIP (If Applicable)

If a student has a Behavior Intervention Plan, you can add it directly to their profile.

  1. Select the student.
  2. Tap the three dots to the right of their name and choose Add BIP.
  3. Complete the required fields: Plan Date, Scheduled Review Date, Target Behavior, Hypothesis Statement, and Replacement Behavior.
  4. Optionally add intervention strategies.
  5. Select Save.

You can edit or delete a BIP at any time from the student's profile.
