Supported Browsers, Devices, and System Requirements

BrighterBalance is a web-based application that runs in any modern browser on any modern device. There is no software to install, no plugins, and no platform-specific build. This article documents supported browsers, devices, operating systems, and minimum network requirements for districts evaluating BrighterBalance for deployment.

Supported Browsers

BrighterBalance supports the two most recent major versions of each of the following browsers:

Internet Explorer is not supported. Districts running Internet Explorer–only environments should plan to use Edge in modern mode.

Supported Operating Systems

  • Windows — Windows 10 and Windows 11
  • macOS — macOS 12 (Monterey) and later
  • ChromeOS — Current and previous stable channel
  • iOS / iPadOS — iOS 16 and later
  • Android — Android 11 and later

Older versions may work but are not actively tested or supported.

Devices

BrighterBalance is designed mobile-first and works on:

  • Laptops and desktops (Windows, macOS, ChromeOS)
  • Chromebooks (managed and unmanaged)
  • Tablets (iPad, Android tablets, Surface)
  • Smartphones (iOS and Android)
  • Interactive displays with a supported browser

Minimum recommended screen width is 360 CSS pixels. The interface reflows responsively from phone to desktop.

Install as a Mobile App (Optional)

BrighterBalance is a Progressive Web App (PWA). Teachers can install it to their phone or tablet home screen for app-like access without going through the App Store or Google Play:

  • iOS / iPadOS (Safari): Tap the Share button → Add to Home Screen
  • Android (Chrome): Tap the menu → Install app or Add to Home Screen

The installed PWA supports limited offline use: behavior logs captured offline are queued locally and sync automatically when connectivity returns.

Network Requirements

  • Internet connection: Standard broadband or LTE/5G. No minimum bandwidth threshold for typical use.
  • Protocol: HTTPS (TCP port 443)
  • Latency: Comfortable use under 300 ms round-trip; functional under 1 second
  • Per-user bandwidth (typical): Under 5 Mbps peak, well under 1 Mbps sustained

Accessibility

BrighterBalance is built to WCAG 2.1 / 2.2 Level AA targets. A current Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is available on request from hello@brighterbalance.app.
